Annual 6-a-Side Tournament set for June 9-10, 2001
By Stan Walker
This years annual Six-a-Side tournament is gearing up
to be the biggest ever. Based on interest coming in from a
number of new teams, it is likely that the popular Hartford
tournament will draw the full quota of 16 teams which it is
set up to accommodate. The competition will be staged at its
usual venue Hartfords Keney Park located just two hours
from Boston and New York.
Speculations are that the tournament which has so far drawn
teams from the Caribbean, Canada, England and other states
in the U.S., may this year have its largest contingent of
foreign teams. At the end of last season, new clay was added
to the wickets at Keney Park, so when the tournament gets
underway, it may take some time for the players to get adjusted
to the new surface.
Teams
will once again be competing for the Jamaica Tourist Boards
trophy, a first prize of $3,000 (based on the number of entries)
and a variety of other cash prizes. Registration for participation
is presently being accepted and teams will be entered based
on a first-come, first-served basis.
There
are six active teams in Hartford who participate in the annual
Connecticut Cricket Leagues tournament which is comprised
of 12 teams. Players in the league comes from all over the
world. The cricket season in Connecticut begins in May.
